Custom Overhead Cranes

Overhead cranes are permanent fixtures designed to lift, move, and position loads that are too large, heavy, or cumbersome to be handled manually. Because they operate above workstations, production lines, and loading areas, they free up valuable floor space while enabling you to transfer objects safely between locations.

Overhead Crane Types and Configurations

Flatiron manufactures a wide range of overhead cranes, tailored to your specific application and operational environment. Precision engineering ensures our systems integrate seamlessly into your existing infrastructure, so no matter what type of material you’re lifting, you can be certain it will be handled reliably—even in demanding industrial settings.

Choosing the most efficient configuration depends not only on your lifting requirements, but on the size, shape, and layout of your facility or worksite. Depending on your operation, you may need:

Bridge Cranes

Bridge cranes consist of one or two girders that span your entire work area and are supported on either side by runways built into your building’s support structure. Single girder bridge cranes are ideal for handling light loads in small areas, while double girder bridge cranes are designed for large areas and heavy-duty applications.

Jib Cranes

Jib cranes consist of a long, horizontal arm that contains the hoist. Freestanding jib cranes can rotate a full 360°, allowing workers to lift and move objects in any direction within their immediate area. A popular choice for locations with limited floor space, mounted jib cranes are attached to an existing wall or column and can rotate up to 220°.

Gantry Cranes

Gantry cranes are supported by legs and move back and forth on a rail system. Full gantry cranes are self-sufficient units that operate independently of surrounding structures, making them an excellent choice for outdoor operations. Semi-gantry cranes are supported by a set of legs on one side and a runway on the other, a cost-effective option for medium-duty applications.

Workstation Cranes

Workstation cranes allow operators to lift and move small loads from one point to another. Built to streamline small, repetitive tasks, workstation cranes are modular systems that can be easily customized in order to increase productivity and adapt to the evolving needs of your workplace while reducing the risk of accidents associated with manual load handling.

Overhead Crane Safety & Compliance

For Flatiron, safety is always top priority. Smart drives, automation, and precise sensors keep loads steady and stable during lifting operations, preventing drops, falls, and collisions that could endanger payloads and operators.

Our cranes are built to the highest standards, with high-quality materials and reinforced components backed by periodic inspections designed to identify issues early, before they escalate and increase the risk of accidents or unscheduled downtime.

FAQs

  1. How does Flatiron Crane determine the right overhead crane capacity for my facility?

We start by examining your loads and operational cycle to identify the maximum weight your crane needs to lift and how often it needs to lift it. Then we analyze the load’s size, shape, and center of gravity, as well as the span and lifting height of your crane—to ensure it’s strong enough to provide a stable platform.

  2. What are the typical lead times for custom overhead crane systems?

The lead time for a custom overhead crane depends on the size and complexity of the system. Small cranes can be completed in 8-12 weeks, while large systems may require 12-18 months depending on their span, capacity, height and hardware.

  3. Can you upgrade or modify existing overhead cranes?

Yes, Flatiron can incorporate new components and technologies into existing overhead crane systems to improve their capacity, performance, and longevity.

  4. Can you work with cranes from other manufacturers or brands outside the Flatiron family?

Flatiron works with cranes from all major manufacturers, even custom cranes we didn’t design or install.

  5. What happens if my crane breaks down outside normal business hours?

Our service team is available 24/7 to get your cranes back up and running as soon as possible.
